Michelin Pilot Road Motorcycle Tyres

Introducing the Michelin Pilot Road 4 is a bit like introducing a minor celebrity everyone has already heard of. What makes the Michelin Pilot Road 4 actually exciting enough to tell you about, however, is that Michelin has taken everything that was already good about this awesome tyre technology and made it even better.

What's New in Michelin Pilot Tyres?

Where the development of XST was an evolutionary leap forward in sipe technology, forever changing the way we think about road tyres, the new XST+ adds a diagonal cut to the leading edge of each sipe, helping extend the life of the tyre.

Just to digress for a moment, Michelin Pilot tyres have always been notable for their longevity, but it was still observed that repeated braking would eventually show visible wear on the leading edge of the sipes. The diagonal cuts introduced with XST+ slow down the rate of that wear.

The dual compound construction (2CT) used in the Pilot 3 has been enhanced further in the latest edition of the Michelin Pilot road tyre by profiling the tyre shape for enhanced performance and better wear resistance.

Pilot Road 4 & 4 GT

Michelin's testing, as reported on the official Michelin site, indicates these properties of Michelin Pilot motorcycle tyres:

XST+ gives up to 17% shorter braking time on wet surfaces in comparison to competitors, and up to 24% shorter breaking on "extremely slippery surfaces".

XST+ in combination with 2CT can extend the life of the tyres by up to 20%.

The patented tread technology provides optimal grip at any lean angle, with excellent water evacuation.

Available Pilot Road variants

As is always the case with tyres from this manufacturer, you get choices. With the Michelin Pilot bike tyres, there are three variants to choose from: Standard, GT, and Trail, each available in up to five different sizes.

The Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT is the official tyre for BMW R 1200 RT motorcycles. This model employs yet another Michelin technology, which they're calling Dual Angle Technology (2AT), which purports to improve the performance of the tyre beyond the enhancements already added to the standard model.

What exactly is 2AT? Simply put, it's a combination of bias ply and radial tyres into a hybrid that gives the benefits of both.

The so-called Trail variant is not an off-road tyre, but it is highly suited to use in a rural environment. Made with silica-rich rubber, it gives good "stickiness" in road surface conditions ranging in temperature from -5°C to 45°C, and can handle various surface types, including gravel or dirt roads.
